For this week's Disquiet assignment, I wasn't sure where to start. The instruction was only to remove, rather than to add anything or reorganise the source in any way. I felt this would apply to most filters -- though I don't know precisely if I made an error in the ones I chose, as I have more of an understanding of the kind of sound an effect makes than with technical details -- and so I went to KVR Audio to pick up some appropriate VST's.
I wasn't sure if there was a better way of going about it using my audio software -- I'm most familiar with Acid Music Studio -- so rather than try and figure out a way to apply a filter to just part of the source audio, I repeated it on four tracks and put a different filter on each, taking that opportunity to adjust their stereo position as well. I then added filters that would apply to the combined result.
I was rather inspired, part way through, by the game Nier -- both in its atmosphere and soundtrack -- and particularly the area called the Aerie, so I tried to evoke something of the feeling of isolation and strangeness found within.
The source audio for this composition is a recording by Luftrum of waves crashing on the shore of Kalundborg Fjord at Røsnæs, Denmark:
